Vermiculite

Vermiculite is a safe inert material and is light in colour. When heated it expands (exfoliates) up to 30 times its original volume. The exfoliation process converts the dense flakes of ore into lightweight porous granules containing innumerable minute air layers.

Mineralogical Aspects of Expanded Vermiculite Ores

It is believed that about 70% of the deposits are not pure vermiculite, but rather mixed-layer mica-vermiculite structures containing vermiculite and biotite (phlogopite) in various proportions . Such a structure can be regular or irregular, but in any case it affects the properties of vermiculite ore, in particular expansion.
